Reuben
Some exciting news on my end is that I just bought a new camera. I have been eyeing this camera for months wondering if this was the right time in my life take the dive and invest in a truly spectacular camera. Don’t get me wrong, my Nikon D700 has been my hero, a camera that has never let me down, traveled across the world to New Zealand, Thailand, Bali and several burns, countless road trips and has been my tool, my unfailing companion whenever I leave my house. But the time came to upgrade to the D4. With it’s incredible lowlight capabilities and option for video it already has increased my potential for greatness in the people, places, and events that I capture.
For my first shoot to break in the camera I had an old friend reach out to facebook asking if anyone would do a model shoot with him. To me it was perfect timing. Is there anything better than reconnecting with an old friend while working with a new friend (the D4) doing what you love? I headed up to Nevada City to spend the day on the Yuba River working with my good friend (and his fabulous head of hair) to come up with some beautiful shots. We wandered through treelined paths, down to the edge of the river, defended our snacks from invading ground squirrels, climbed trees and rocks and talked about what life on this planet means. We discussed the art and the technical nature of photography, what makes a good model, the people in our lives, relationships, and our own philosophies of life that we have created over the last few years. We spent the end of the day in downtown Nevada City, finding all the amazing textures to pose by. However Reuben’s final ascent of an art structure and proclaiming to no one in particular, “not to worry, it’s for ART!” with a sweeping gesture of his arm really put the icing on the cake.
There’s nothing like a day in the woods to refresh and reboot. My favorite part of a photo shoot is making people feel at ease with themselves so that they can be a ‘model’ but also let their true selves shine and let that smile that they’ve had since they day they were born flash unabashedly to the ever observant camera. You’ll see below that Reuben has a terrific smile, it lights up his entire face.
I wish I could spend every day this way, documenting the humans of this world and the complexity of our being, one at time, person to person, removed from the hustle and bustle of life, at the edge of a river.
Sometimes not all nooks are good picture nooks.
I snuck in for a picture thanks to a couple passing by who knew how to work a camera. Turns out I really know how to strike a pose.
“Bang bang my baby shot me down.”
“Not to worry, it’s for ART!”
